Convert Thou to Feet
1 thou is 0.00008333 ft. One thou is exactly 0.0000833333333333 feet.
One thou is 8.3333 × 10^-5 feet. To convert thou to feet, multiply by 8.3333 × 10^-5; to go the other way, divide by 8.3333 × 10^-5 or multiply by 12000. The relation is exact but the figure is not: it is a rounding of a number that does not terminate, and it follows from NIST.

How do you convert thou to feet? The converter and the working
- 1.Take the measurement in thou.
- 2.Multiply by 8.3333 × 10^-5 — that is how many feet fit in one thou.
- 3.To go back the other way, divide by 8.3333 × 10^-5, or multiply by 12000.
Worked example: 25 thou to feet
- Formula
- thou × 8.3333 × 10^-5 = ft
- Arithmetic
- 25 × 8.3333 × 10^-5 = 0.002083 ft
- Answer
- 25 thou = 0.002083 ft
The factor is rounded for display; the figure above is computed from the full value.

What is a thou?
A thousandth of an inch, exactly 25.4 micrometers, and called a mil in American workshops — the same word the metric world uses for a millimeter, which is why a drawing marked "5 mil" is worth checking twice.
What is a foot?
Twelve inches, or exactly 0.3048 meters. Still the working unit of US construction.
How many feet are in a thou?
One thou is 8.3333 × 10^-5 feet. Going the other way, one foot is 12000 thou. Both figures come from the same defined relation rather than from a measurement, which is why they are the same today as they were in 1959.
