Convert Feet to Miles
1 foot is 0.0001894 mi. One foot is exactly 0.000189393939394 miles.
One foot is 1.8939 × 10^-4 miles. To convert feet to miles, multiply by 1.8939 × 10^-4; to go the other way, divide by 1.8939 × 10^-4 or multiply by 5280. The relation is exact but the figure is not: it is a rounding of a number that does not terminate, and it follows from NIST. Twelve inches, or exactly 0.3048 meters.

How do you convert feet to miles? The converter and the working
- 1.Take the measurement in feet.
- 2.Multiply by 1.8939 × 10^-4 — that is how many miles fit in one foot.
- 3.To go back the other way, divide by 1.8939 × 10^-4, or multiply by 5280.
Worked example: 25 feet to miles
- Formula
- ft × 1.8939 × 10^-4 = mi
- Arithmetic
- 25 × 1.8939 × 10^-4 = 0.004735 mi
- Answer
- 25 ft = 0.004735 mi
The factor is rounded for display; the figure above is computed from the full value.

5,280 feet, because a furlong refused to divide by a Roman mile
The Roman mile was a thousand paces, about 5,000 ft, and English land was measured in furlongs of 660 ft. Eight furlongs is 5,280, and the statute of 1593 chose the round number of furlongs over the round number of feet. The international mile is exactly 1,609.344 m; the US survey mile, retired by NIST at the end of 2022, is longer by about 3 mm and still appears in old deeds and state plane coordinates.
What is a foot?
Twelve inches, or exactly 0.3048 meters. Still the working unit of US construction.
What is a mile?
Exactly 5,280 feet — a survivor of the Roman mille passus, rounded up by an English statute of 1593.
How many miles are in a foot?
One foot is 1.8939 × 10^-4 miles. Going the other way, one mile is 5280 feet. Both figures come from the same defined relation rather than from a measurement, which is why they are the same today as they were in 1959.
