Convert Miles to Feet
1 mile is 5,280 ft. One mile is exactly 5280 feet.
One mile is 5280 feet. To convert miles to feet, multiply by 5280; to go the other way, divide by 5280 or multiply by 1.8939 × 10^-4. The factor is exact rather than rounded: it follows from NIST. Exactly 5,280 feet — a survivor of the Roman mille passus, rounded up by an English statute of 1593.

How do you convert miles to feet? The converter and the working
- 1.Take the measurement in miles.
- 2.Multiply by 5280 — that is how many feet fit in one mile.
- 3.To go back the other way, divide by 5280, or multiply by 1.8939 × 10^-4.
Worked example: 25 miles to feet
- Formula
- mi × 5280 = ft
- Arithmetic
- 25 × 5280 = 132,000 ft
- Answer
- 25 mi = 132,000 ft
The factor is exact, so this figure is exact too — only the display is rounded.

5,280 feet, because a furlong refused to divide by a Roman mile
The Roman mile was a thousand paces, about 5,000 ft, and English land was measured in furlongs of 660 ft. Eight furlongs is 5,280, and the statute of 1593 chose the round number of furlongs over the round number of feet. The international mile is exactly 1,609.344 m; the US survey mile, retired by NIST at the end of 2022, is longer by about 3 mm and still appears in old deeds and state plane coordinates.
What is a mile?
Exactly 5,280 feet — a survivor of the Roman mille passus, rounded up by an English statute of 1593.
What is a foot?
Twelve inches, or exactly 0.3048 meters. Still the working unit of US construction.
How many feet are in a mile?
One mile is 5280 feet, exactly. Going the other way, one foot is 1.8939 × 10^-4 miles. Both figures come from the same defined relation rather than from a measurement, which is why they are the same today as they were in 1959.
