Normal runs to Mon, November 2, 2026. Before that date, a tracker that has not moved is not evidence of a problem.

What each status actually means

Return received
The IRS has the return and has started on it. It says nothing about whether the refund is approved, and a return can sit here for its whole processing time.
Refund approved
The amount is settled and a date has been set. This is the first point at which the figure on screen is the figure you will be paid.
Refund sent
Money has left the IRS. A direct deposit takes up to 5 more days to appear in an account and a cheque up to several weeks in the post.

You need the exact refund amount, a social security number or ITIN, the filing status and the tax year. The automated line is 800-829-1954 and carries the same information.

The three ordinary reasons it is slower

  • The mid-February hold. A return claiming the earned income credit or the refundable child credit cannot be paid before mid-February, by law, however early it was filed — and the hold covers the whole refund, not just the credit. File on the first day of the season and the money still waits.
  • A return that needs a person. An arithmetic slip, a missing form, or figures that do not match what an employer or broker reported takes it out of the automated path. The IRS writes rather than telephones, so the first sign is a letter.
  • An offset. Past-due child support, state tax or a federal debt is taken out before you see the money, by a different agency, with its own notice arriving afterwards.

None of these is visible in the tracker before it happens, which is why the honest answer to a stalled status is a date rather than a reason. Work out what you are owed on the refund calculator and check it against the figure on screen — a difference is itself information.

Questions people actually ask

How long does a tax refund take?
About 21 days from an electronically filed return with direct deposit, and 42 days or more from one posted on paper. The status appears in Where's My Refund a day after e-filing a current-year return, three days after e-filing a prior year, and four weeks after a paper return arrives. A refund that has not landed inside those windows is common enough not to mean anything by itself.
Why is my refund taking longer than 21 days?
The three usual reasons are ordinary. A return claiming the earned income credit or the additional child credit is held by law until mid-February however early it was filed, and the hold applies to the whole refund rather than to the credit. A return with an error, a missing form or a mismatch against what an employer reported goes to a person rather than a machine. And a refund offset against child support, state tax or a federal debt is paid to the creditor first — the notice about that arrives after the money has already gone.
What do Received, Approved and Sent mean?
Return received: The IRS has the return and has started on it. It says nothing about whether the refund is approved, and a return can sit here for its whole processing time. Refund approved: The amount is settled and a date has been set. This is the first point at which the figure on screen is the figure you will be paid. Refund sent: Money has left the IRS. A direct deposit takes up to 5 more days to appear in an account and a cheque up to several weeks in the post.
How often does Where’s My Refund update?
Once a day, usually overnight. Checking it hourly produces the same screen, and the number of times you check has no effect on processing — a belief common enough that the IRS says so on its own page.
Does direct deposit arrive on the day the IRS sends it?
Not necessarily. "Refund sent" means the money has left the IRS; a bank can take up to five more days to post it, and a paper cheque takes several weeks in the post. A deposit rejected by the bank — a closed account, a name mismatch — comes back to the IRS and is reissued as a cheque, which adds weeks.
What is a refund offset?
Money taken from your refund to pay a debt: past-due child support, state income tax, unemployment compensation repayments or a federal non-tax debt such as a student loan. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service does it, not the IRS, and it sends its own notice. The refund tracker will show the original amount before the offset, which is why the figure on screen and the figure in the account can differ.
