Where’s my amended return?
A Form 1040-X shows nothing for about three weeks and then takes 8 to 12, sometimes 16. That first silence is the part that worries people and it is normal: the tracker cannot report on a return that has not been entered yet. The original refund runs on a separate clock — three weeks e-filed, six or more on paper — and the two are unrelated.
A Form 1040-X is invisible for about three weeks and then takes 8 to 12 weeks, sometimes 16. Put in the date you filed and this works out which of those you are in — because the useful question is not how long it takes, it is whether today is late enough to worry.

Where you are
26 days before the early end
Normal runs to Tue, December 22, 2026. Before that date, a tracker that has not moved is not evidence of a problem.

What each status actually means
- Received
- The 1040-X is in the system. It takes about three weeks after you file for it to reach even this stage, which is why the tool says nothing at first.
- Adjusted
- The change has been made to your account. A refund, a balance owed, or no change at all follows from it.
- Completed
- The IRS has finished and has sent whatever was owed. A notice explaining the adjustment arrives separately.
The tool updates once a day, so refreshing it more often than that tells you nothing new. It is down on Mondays from midnight to 3 a.m. Eastern and on some Sundays from 1 to 7 a.m.
Five amendments the tracker cannot show at all
For these it will say the return cannot be found however long you wait, and that is not a sign of a problem — it is the tool being out of scope.
- Business returns
- Carryback applications and claims
- Injured spouse claims
- A Form 1040 marked "amended" or "corrected" instead of a 1040-X
- Returns pulled into Examination, Bankruptcy or another special unit
The deadline that does not wait
To claim a refund on an amended return you have three years from the date you filed the original, or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. A return filed before the deadline counts as filed on the deadline, so a 2022 return filed in February 2023 runs to 15 April 2026 rather than to February.
After that the amendment can still correct your record — and you still owe anything extra it turns up — but money the IRS would have refunded is no longer claimable. Special rules run longer for net operating losses, foreign tax credits and bad debts.
Questions people actually ask
- How long does an amended return take?
- Three weeks before the tracker shows anything at all, then 8 to 12 weeks of processing, and up to 16 in some cases. That is 21 days of silence followed by two to four months, and the silence is the part that produces the search. Where's My Amended Return covers the current tax year and the three before it.
- Why does Where’s My Amended Return say my return was not found?
- Almost always because it is too early: nothing appears for about three weeks after filing, and longer if you posted it. The other reason is that your amendment is one of the kinds the tool cannot report on — a business return, a carryback claim, an injured spouse claim, a 1040 marked "amended" rather than a 1040-X, or a return pulled into Examination or Bankruptcy. None of those means anything is wrong.
- What do Received, Adjusted and Completed mean?
- Received: The 1040-X is in the system. It takes about three weeks after you file for it to reach even this stage, which is why the tool says nothing at first. Adjusted: The change has been made to your account. A refund, a balance owed, or no change at all follows from it. Completed: The IRS has finished and has sent whatever was owed. A notice explaining the adjustment arrives separately.
- How long do I have to amend a return and still get money back?
- Three years from the date you filed the original return, or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. A return filed early counts as filed on the due date. Past that, the amendment can still correct the record but the refund is gone — which is the one deadline on this page that cannot be waited out.
- When should I call?
- When the tracker tells you to, or when the outside window has passed. The amended-return line is 866-464-2050. Calling earlier gets you the same information the tool has, which is the information you already have.
- Do I need to amend at all?
- Often not. The IRS fixes arithmetic on its own and writes to you about a missing form rather than making you refile. An amendment is for a change of substance — filing status, income, deductions or credits that were wrong, not mistyped.
