Convert Square meters to Hectares
1 square meter is 0.0001 ha. One square meter is exactly 0.0001 hectares.
One square meter is 1.0000 × 10^-4 hectares. To convert square meters to hectares, multiply by 1.0000 × 10^-4; to go the other way, divide by 1.0000 × 10^-4 or multiply by 10000. The relation is exact but the figure is not: it is a rounding of a number that does not terminate, and it follows from NIST Office of Weights and Measures. A meter on a side, and about 10.764 square feet.

Factors are entered by hand from NIST Office of Weights and Measures rather than derived from a units library, so the ones that terminate are exact rather than rounded.
The same converter answers this pair however it is written: square metres to hectares is the British spelling of the same units — the metre and the litre are spelled that way outside the United States and the quantity does not change, and sqm to ha is how the symbols are typed on a keyboard with no superscript on it.
How do you convert square meters to hectares? The converter and the working
- 1.Take the measurement in square meters.
- 2.Multiply by 1.0000 × 10^-4 — that is how many hectares fit in one square meter.
- 3.To go back the other way, divide by 1.0000 × 10^-4, or multiply by 10000.
Worked example: 25 square meters to hectares
- Formula
- m² × 1.0000 × 10^-4 = ha
- Arithmetic
- 25 × 1.0000 × 10^-4 = 0.0025 ha
- Answer
- 25 m² = 0.0025 ha
The factor is rounded for display; the figure above is computed from the full value.

A hectare is 10,000 square meters, not 100
The prefix belongs to the wrong word. "Hect-" means a hundred, but it multiplies the are — 100 m² — not the square meter, so a hectare is a hundred ares and 10,000 m². The are itself has all but vanished, which is why the name now looks like it is lying. A hectare is a square 100 m on a side, near enough two American football fields including the end zones.
