A yard is three feet, so a square yard is three feet by three feet — nine square feet. This is the single most common error in flooring and carpet estimates: a 12 × 15 ft room is 180 ft², which is 20 yd², not 60. Carpet is still sold by the square yard in the US and by the square meter almost everywhere else, so the same room is quoted three different ways.
