Convert Milliradians to Degrees

1 milliradian is 0.06 °. One milliradian is exactly 0.0572957795131 degrees.

One milliradian is 0.05729578 degrees. To convert milliradians to degrees, multiply by 0.05729578; to go the other way, divide by 0.05729578 or multiply by 17.453293. The relation is exact but the figure is not: it is a rounding of a number that does not terminate, and it follows from NIST Special Publication 811.

Factors are entered by hand from NIST Special Publication 811 rather than derived from a units library, so the ones that terminate are exact rather than rounded.

How do you convert milliradians to degrees? The converter and the working

  1. 1.Take the measurement in milliradians.
  2. 2.Multiply by 0.05729578 — that is how many degrees fit in one milliradian.
  3. 3.To go back the other way, divide by 0.05729578, or multiply by 17.453293.

Worked example: 25 milliradians to degrees

Formula
mrad × 0.05729578 = °
Arithmetic
25 × 0.05729578 = 1.43 °
Answer
25 mrad = 1.43 °

The factor is rounded for display; the figure above is computed from the full value.

The scope mil and the military mil are not the same mil

A true milliradian is a thousandth of a radian, which puts 6,283.19 of them in a full turn and moves the point of impact 10 cm at 100 m. NATO rounds the same idea to 6,400 to a turn so it divides cleanly by compass points, and Warsaw Pact systems used 6,000. A scope adjusting in true mils and a fire-control table written in NATO mils differ by about 2%, which is a meter and a half at a kilometer.

What is a milliradian?

A thousandth of a radian, and the unit rifle scopes adjust in: at 100 meters one milliradian moves the point of impact by 10 cm. The military "mil" is a different thing — 6,400 to a turn rather than the true 6,283.

What is a degree?

A 360th of a full turn, inherited from Babylonian astronomy and its base-60 arithmetic. 360 survives because it divides evenly by everything from 2 to 12 except 7.

How many degrees are in a milliradian?

One milliradian is 0.05729578 degrees. Going the other way, one degree is 17.453293 milliradians. Both figures come from the same defined relation rather than from a measurement, which is why they are the same today as they were in 1959.

The whole group — 7 units with their symbols and the size of each one in radians — is on the conversion index, along with every pair it makes. The table above already gives each of them relative to a milliradian.
