Convert Meters to Yards
1 meter is 1.09 yd. One meter is exactly 1.09361329834 yards.
One meter is 1.0936133 yards. To convert meters to yards, multiply by 1.0936133; to go the other way, divide by 1.0936133 or multiply by 0.9144. The relation is exact but the figure is not: it is a rounding of a number that does not terminate, and it follows from NIST. The SI base unit, defined since 1983 by the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second.

Factors are entered by hand from NIST rather than derived from a units library, so the ones that terminate are exact rather than rounded.
The same converter answers this pair however it is written: metres to yards is the British spelling of the same units — the metre and the litre are spelled that way outside the United States and the quantity does not change.
How do you convert meters to yards? The converter and the working
- 1.Take the measurement in meters.
- 2.Multiply by 1.0936133 — that is how many yards fit in one meter.
- 3.To go back the other way, divide by 1.0936133, or multiply by 0.9144.
Worked example: 25 meters to yards
- Formula
- m × 1.0936133 = yd
- Arithmetic
- 25 × 1.0936133 = 27.34 yd
- Answer
- 25 m = 27.34 yd
The factor is rounded for display; the figure above is computed from the full value.

Exactly 0.9144 meters since 1959, and the old foot is now retired
The international yard has been exactly 0.9144 m since the 1959 agreement, which makes the foot exactly 0.3048 m. The US survey foot, two parts per million longer, was kept alive for land surveying until NIST and NGS retired it at the end of 2022. Two parts per million is a millimeter in a kilometer — invisible in a room and a meter across a county.
What is a meter?
The SI base unit, defined since 1983 by the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
What is a yard?
Three feet, or exactly 0.9144 meters. Concrete and fabric are both sold by it.
How many yards are in a meter?
One meter is 1.0936133 yards. Going the other way, one yard is 0.9144 meters. Both figures come from the same defined relation rather than from a measurement, which is why they are the same today as they were in 1959.

The whole group — 13 units with their symbols and the size of each one in meters — is on the conversion index, along with every pair it makes. The table above already gives each of them relative to a meter.
