Factors are entered by hand from NIST Handbook 130 rather than derived from a units library, so the ones that terminate are exact rather than rounded.

The same converter answers this pair however it is written: litres to US gallons is the British spelling of the same units — the metre and the litre are spelled that way outside the United States and the quantity does not change.

How do you convert liters to US gallons? The converter and the working

  1. 1.Take the measurement in liters.
  2. 2.Multiply by 0.26417205 — that is how many US gallons fit in one liter.
  3. 3.To go back the other way, divide by 0.26417205, or multiply by 3.7854118.

Worked example: 25 liters to US gallons

Formula
L × 0.26417205 = gal
Arithmetic
25 × 0.26417205 = 6.6 gal
Answer
25 L = 6.6 gal

The factor is rounded for display; the figure above is computed from the full value.

A US gallon and a UK gallon are not the same gallon

The US gallon is 3.785411784 liters; the imperial gallon, still used in the UK for fuel economy and in a few Commonwealth countries, is 4.54609 liters — twenty per cent larger. Every figure on this page is the US gallon. It is also why British and American miles-per-gallon numbers cannot be compared: 40 mpg in the UK is about 33 mpg in the US, on the same car.

NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C — general tables of units of measurement

What is a liter?

One cubic decimeter. A liter of water weighs almost exactly one kilogram, which is how the unit was designed.

What is a US gallon?

Exactly 231 cubic inches. The imperial gallon is 4.546 liters, so US and UK fuel economy figures are not comparable.

How many US gallons are in a liter?

One liter is 0.26417205 US gallons. Going the other way, one US gallon is 3.7854118 liters. Both figures come from the same defined relation rather than from a measurement, which is why they are the same today as they were in 1959.

Every volume unit here

The whole group — 20 units with their symbols and the size of each one in liters — is on the conversion index, along with every pair it makes. The table above already gives each of them relative to a liter.
