Convert Kilograms to Tonnes

1 kilogram is 0.001 t. One kilogram is exactly 0.001 tonnes.

One kilogram is 0.001 tonnes. To convert kilograms to tonnes, multiply by 0.001; to go the other way, divide by 0.001 or multiply by 1000. The factor is exact rather than rounded: it follows from NIST Handbook 44. The SI base unit of mass, defined since 2019 by fixing the Planck constant rather than by a metal cylinder in Paris.

How do you convert kilograms to tonnes? The converter and the working

  1. 1.Take the measurement in kilograms.
  2. 2.Multiply by 0.001 — that is how many tonnes fit in one kilogram.
  3. 3.To go back the other way, divide by 0.001, or multiply by 1000.

Worked example: 25 kilograms to tonnes

Formula
kg × 0.001 = t
Arithmetic
25 × 0.001 = 0.03 t
Answer
25 kg = 0.03 t

The factor is exact, so this figure is exact too — only the display is rounded.

A tonne is a megagram, and two other tons are close enough to be confused

The tonne is exactly 1,000 kg — the SI name for it is the megagram, which nobody uses. The US short ton is 907.18474 kg and the British long ton is 1,016.0469 kg, so the three sit within about 10% of each other and a freight or emissions figure is ambiguous without the spelling. "Tonne" and "metric ton" always mean 1,000 kg; a bare "ton" in an American source means the short ton.

NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C — general tables of units of measurement

What is a kilogram?

The SI base unit of mass, defined since 2019 by fixing the Planck constant rather than by a metal cylinder in Paris.

What is a tonne?

One thousand kilograms, also called the metric ton — 2,204.6 pounds.

How many tonnes are in a kilogram?

One kilogram is 0.001 tonnes, exactly. Going the other way, one tonne is 1000 kilograms. Both figures come from the same defined relation rather than from a measurement, which is why they are the same today as they were in 1959.

Every weight unit here

The whole group — 15 units with their symbols and the size of each one in kilograms — is on the conversion index, along with every pair it makes. The table above already gives each of them relative to a kilogram.
