Convert Hertz to Revolutions per minute

1 hertz is 60 rpm. One hertz is exactly 60 revolutions per minute.

One hertz is 60 revolutions per minute. To convert hertz to revolutions per minute, multiply by 60; to go the other way, divide by 60 or multiply by 0.016666667. The factor is exact rather than rounded: it follows from NIST Special Publication 811. One cycle per second.

Factors are entered by hand from NIST Special Publication 811 rather than derived from a units library, so the ones that terminate are exact rather than rounded.

How do you convert hertz to revolutions per minute? The converter and the working

  1. 1.Take the measurement in hertz.
  2. 2.Multiply by 60 — that is how many revolutions per minute fit in one hertz.
  3. 3.To go back the other way, divide by 60, or multiply by 0.016666667.

Worked example: 25 hertz to revolutions per minute

Formula
Hz × 60 = rpm
Arithmetic
25 × 60 = 1,500 rpm
Answer
25 Hz = 1,500 rpm

The factor is exact, so this figure is exact too — only the display is rounded.

Sixty rpm is one hertz

Both count the same thing at different rates: revolutions per minute against cycles per second. A 7,200 rpm hard drive spins at 120 Hz, a 3,000 rpm engine turns at 50 Hz, and a mains motor on a 50 Hz supply runs near 3,000 rpm for exactly that reason — the two numbers are the same fact divided by sixty.

What is a hertz?

One cycle per second. The SI unit is defined as a reciprocal second, which is why it is used for periodic events and never for a rate of something that is not periodic.

What is a revolution per minute?

One turn a minute, so 60 rpm is 1 Hz. Engines, drills and hard drives are all rated in it: a 7,200 rpm drive spins at 120 Hz.

How many revolutions per minute are in a hertz?

One hertz is 60 revolutions per minute, exactly. Going the other way, one revolution per minute is 0.016666667 hertz. Both figures come from the same defined relation rather than from a measurement, which is why they are the same today as they were in 1959.

The whole group — 6 units with their symbols and the size of each one in hertzs — is on the conversion index, along with every pair it makes. The table above already gives each of them relative to a hertz.
