Height Converter
With height 178 cm, height converter comes to 5' 10" — height. It is reached in 5 steps, the last of which is 178 / 2.54, and each one is printed on the page with its numbers filled in. The formula is the one published by NIST, not an approximation fitted to it.
Converts height between centimeters, meters and feet-and-inches in either direction. With the centimeters-to-feet chart most people are actually looking for.

Worked example
178 cm is 70.079 inches, which is 5' 10" once rounded the way a height is always given. The sixteenth of an inch above that is real and never said out loud: passports, licences and doctors' charts all round to the whole inch, and so does this.
How to work it out yourself
- 1.Type the height in whatever form you have it: 5' 10", 70 in, or 178 cm. All three parse, and all three are the same height.
- 2.Feet and inches stay exact rather than rounding to the nearest inch, so 5'10.5" does not quietly become 5'11".
- 3.The inch is exactly 25.4 mm by international agreement, so nothing in this conversion is an approximation.

Questions people actually ask
- Is the inch exactly 2.54 cm?
- Yes, by definition since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, which fixed the inch at exactly 25.4 mm. Before that the US and UK inches differed by about two parts per million.
- Can I type feet and inches into a metric field?
- Yes. Every length field on this site parses 5' 10", 5ft 10in and 178 cm identically and converts to whatever the formula needs, so the direction of conversion is whichever way you type it.
- Why does my height vary during the day?
- Spinal discs compress under load. Most people lose 1–2 cm between waking and evening, which is more than the rounding on any of these conversions — measure in the morning if you want a consistent number.
