Roman numeral date converter

8 September 2026 is VIII·IX·MMXXVI in day-month-year order, and IX·VIII·MMXXVI in the American one. Those are the same date and the same six letters in a different order, which is why the page names what your numerals would be read as under the other convention before you have them engraved.

Pick a date and a separator and get it in all three orders. Most of these are going onto something permanent — a ring, a tattoo, an inscription — so the page also names the date your numerals would read as in the other convention, which is the mistake that cannot be undone afterwards.

III·XI·MMXXVI is 3 November 2026 in Britain and 11 March 2026 in the United States. Nothing in the numerals decides between them. Where the day is 13 or higher there is no ambiguity, and the converter says so.

Notation checked against standard subtractive Roman numeral rules · How we check

I·X·MMXXVI

Day first — British and most of the world
I·X·MMXXVI
Month first — United States
X·I·MMXXVI
Year first — unambiguous
MMXXVI·X·I
Written out
I October MMXXVI
The three parts
1 = I, 10 = X, 2026 = MMXXVI

Read in the other order, I·X·MMXXVI is January 10, 2026. Both the day and the month are twelve or under here, so nothing in the numerals themselves says which is which. Year-first order removes the ambiguity, and writing the month out removes it completely.

The leap day is the one to notice: XXIX·II·MMXXIV exists, and the same numerals with MMXXVI in place of MMXXIV describe a day that has never happened. A date converter that rolls 29 February 2026 forward to 1 March instead of refusing it has given you a wrong answer that looks like a right one.

Questions people actually ask

How do you write a date in Roman numerals?
Convert the day, the month and the year separately, then join them with a separator. 3 November 2026 is III·XI·MMXXVI. There are no leading zeros — 3 is III, never 0III — because Roman numerals have no zero to lead with.
Which order should I use?
Day first is the British and international convention; month first is American. If the date will be read by both, put the year first — MMXXVI·XI·III cannot be misread — or write the month out in words, which removes the problem entirely.
What separator do people use?
A middot is the most common on jewellery and tattoos, and it is closest to Roman inscriptional practice. Periods, slashes and dashes all appear; a space alone is risky, because III XI MMXXVI can be read as one long numeral by someone who does not know the convention.
What is 2026 in Roman numerals?
MMXXVI: two thousands, two tens, a five and a one. 2025 was MMXXV and 2027 will be MMXXVII. The year is the part people most often get right and the day the part they get wrong.
Is there a zero in Roman numerals?
No. The system had no symbol for nothing, which is why there is no year nought and why dates written this way cannot be padded to two digits. Anyone writing 0III has translated an Arabic-numeral habit into a system that has no room for it.
Why does my date look wrong on my tattoo?
The usual causes are a padded zero, the day and month swapped, or four identical letters in a row. IIII is not a valid form of 4 in standard notation — it is IV — though clock faces use IIII by tradition, which is where the confusion comes from.
What about dates before year 1?
The Romans counted from the founding of the city, AUC, not from a year one, and there is no year zero in the modern era either. This handles years 1 to 3999, which covers every date anyone is likely to engrave.
