Form G-4 is what sets your state withholding

It was not superseded by the 2020 federal W-4 redesign, so Georgia allowances are still claimed separately from the federal ones.

What Georgia charges as well

Income tax is one of three. The other two do not come out of a paycheck, but they decide what the paycheck buys.

Sales and property tax in Georgia
Sales tax, state plus average local7.56%18th of fifty
Property tax on median home value0.79%25th of fifty

The state rate is 4% and local jurisdictions add 3.56% on average, reaching 7.56% where you shop. At 0.79% that is about $3,160 a year on a $400,000 home. Work yours out on the property tax calculator.

Withholding is an instalment, not the bill. What the year actually settles at is on the refund calculator, and the dates it settles on are the federal tax deadlines.

What this does not include

  • Georgia is flat at 4.99% for 2026. House Bill 463, signed on 11 May 2026, cut it from 5.19% retroactively to 1 January, so tables published earlier in the year show the older figure.
  • Further cuts of 0.125% a year are scheduled toward a floor of 3.99%, conditional on revenue.
  • The standard deduction rises to $15,000 single and $30,000 married from 1 January 2027, not for the 2026 year.

Questions people actually ask

How much is Georgia state income tax?
4.99% for 2026, charged on every dollar of taxable income rather than in bands. A standard deduction of $12,000 single comes off first, so the effective rate is lower — on $75,000 it works out at 4.19%.
What is take-home pay on $75,000 in Georgia?
Georgia takes about $3,144 a year at that salary — 4.19% of gross — before federal tax and FICA. Enter your own figure above for the per-paycheck answer.
Does Georgia have local income taxes?
No local income tax applies in Georgia, so the state figure above is the whole of it.
Is Georgia a high-tax state overall?
On income, Georgia takes 4.19% of a $75,000 salary. But the whole burden is three taxes: sales tax here is 7.56% combined, 18th of fifty, and property tax 0.79%, 25th of fifty. The two pull in opposite directions, which is why a single ranking of "tax-friendly states" tells you little about your own household.
Is this the same as what my employer withholds?
Close, not identical. Withholding follows the W-4 you filed and your state’s equivalent form, which can carry allowances, extra withholding or a second job adjustment this page does not know about. The annual tax is what settles on your return; withholding is an instalment against it.

The same paycheck next door

State income tax follows where you live, not where you work, so a move across one of these lines changes the figure above without changing the job. Rates on the same $75,000.
