Form DE 4 is what sets your state withholding
California allowances stopped matching the federal ones after the 2020 W-4 redesign, so a DE 4 that was never filed leaves you withheld at single with zero regardless of what the W-4 says.
What California charges as well
Income tax is one of three. The other two do not come out of a paycheck, but they decide what the paycheck buys.
| Sales tax, state plus average local | 9.03% | 7th of fifty |
| Property tax on median home value | 0.7% | 32nd of fifty |
The state rate is 7.25% and local jurisdictions add 1.78% on average, reaching 9.03% where you shop. At 0.7% that is about $2,800 a year on a $400,000 home. Work yours out on the property tax calculator.
Withholding is an instalment, not the bill. What the year actually settles at is on the refund calculator, and the dates it settles on are the federal tax deadlines.
What this does not include
- California has the most bands of any state — ten — topping out at 13.3%, which includes the 1% mental health services surcharge on income above $1 million.
- State Disability Insurance is withheld separately from income tax and has had no wage ceiling since 2024, so it applies to every dollar earned. It is not included in this calculation.
- The supplemental rate on bonuses is 10.23%, one of the highest in the country.
Questions people actually ask
- How much is California state income tax?
- It is graduated. The bands run from 1% to 13.3%. On $75,000 the marginal rate is 8% and the effective rate 3.92%, because the lower bands are filled first.
- What is take-home pay on $75,000 in California?
- California takes about $2,941 a year at that salary — 3.92% of gross — before federal tax and FICA. Enter your own figure above for the per-paycheck answer.
- Does California have local income taxes?
- No local income tax applies in California, so the state figure above is the whole of it.
- Is California a high-tax state overall?
- On income, California takes 3.92% of a $75,000 salary. But the whole burden is three taxes: sales tax here is 9.03% combined, 7th of fifty, and property tax 0.7%, 32nd of fifty. The two pull in opposite directions, which is why a single ranking of "tax-friendly states" tells you little about your own household.
- Is this the same as what my employer withholds?
- Close, not identical. Withholding follows the W-4 you filed and your state’s equivalent form, which can carry allowances, extra withholding or a second job adjustment this page does not know about. The annual tax is what settles on your return; withholding is an instalment against it.
The same paycheck next door
State income tax follows where you live, not where you work, so a move across one of these lines changes the figure above without changing the job. Rates on the same $75,000.
