Steps to Miles Calculator
With steps 10000, height 170 cm, weight 75 kg, steps to miles comes to 4.38 mi — miles walked. It is reached in 6 steps, the last of which is 7.055 * 0.6213712, and each one is printed on the page with its numbers filled in. The formula is the one published by ACSM, not an approximation fitted to it.
Steps to miles and kilometres from a stride derived from your height, not the flat 2,000-a-mile pedometers assume — plus what the walk cost in calories.

Worked example
10,000 steps for a 5 ft 7 in man is 4.38 miles, not the 5.0 the 2,000-steps-a-mile rule promises. That gap is 12%, and it is the difference between hitting a weekly mileage target and missing it by half a walk.
How to work it out yourself
- 1.Enter your height first. It sets the stride, and it is the input that moves the answer most — the same 10,000 steps is 3.93 miles at 5 ft 0 in and 4.85 miles at 6 ft 2 in.
- 2.Pick the pace you actually walk. It changes the calories and the time, not the distance: covering a mile costs roughly the same energy fast or slow, but a brisk mile takes 17 minutes and a stroll takes 24.
- 3.Read "your steps in a mile" if you want one number to reuse. Divide any step count by it and you have the miles without coming back.
- 4.For miles to steps, multiply your mileage by that same figure. Three miles at 2,281 steps to the mile is 6,843 steps.

The 10,000-step target is not a health finding. It comes from the name of a 1965 Japanese pedometer, the manpo-kei, which means "10,000-step meter". The 2019 Harvard cohort that tested it found mortality benefit levelling off around 7,500.
The formula
- Step length
170 * (0.415 * 1 + 0.413 * 0) - Distance
10000 * 70.55 / 100000 - Distance
7.055 * 0.6213712 - Your steps in a mile
160934.4 / 70.55 - Time on your feet
4.3837738 / 3.5 * 60 - Calories burned
4.3 * 3.5 * 75 / 200 * 75.150407

Questions people actually ask
- How many steps are in a mile?
- Between about 2,060 and 2,550 across the adult height range. The 2,000 figure printed on pedometers sits below all of it: at 5 ft 7 in the real answer is 2,281, at 6 ft 2 in it is 2,063, and at 5 ft 0 in it is 2,545. Taking 2,000 overstates the distance by 14% for an average adult.
- How far is 10,000 steps?
- 4.38 miles or 7.06 km for a 5 ft 7 in walker, and 4.85 miles for someone at 6 ft 2 in. At a brisk 3.5 mph that is 75 minutes on your feet and 424 kcal for a 75 kg person.
- Where does 10,000 steps come from?
- A 1965 Japanese pedometer called the manpo-kei — literally "10,000-step meter". It was a product name, not a study. The 2019 JAMA Internal Medicine cohort of 16,741 older women found mortality benefit rising to about 7,500 steps a day and then levelling off.
- Does stride length change when I walk faster?
- Yes — a faster walk lengthens the step as well as quickening it, by roughly 5 to 10% between a stroll and a brisk pace. The height formula describes a comfortable walking stride, so a treadmill sprint covers more ground per step than it predicts.
- Why do my watch and this page disagree?
- Because a watch usually calibrates stride from GPS on your actual walks, which beats any height formula if you have walked outdoors with it. Indoors and on a treadmill it falls back to an estimate much like this one.
