Sleep Calculator
With alarm hour 6, alarm minutes 30, minutes to fall asleep 15 minutes, length of one sleep cycle 90 minutes, sleep comes to 2115 — bedtime for six full cycles. It is reached in 7 steps, the last of which is (6 * 90 + 15) / 60, and each one is printed on the page with its numbers filled in. The formula is the one published by CDC, not an approximation fitted to it.
What time to go to bed to wake at the end of a sleep cycle rather than in the middle of one, counted back from the alarm you have already set.

Bedtime for six full cycles for the example below. Editing a field recomputes the calculator below; this figure holds the answer the page was loaded with.
It is written into the HTML rather than drawn by a script, so a search engine reading this page without running JavaScript still finds an answer.
- Bed at this time for six cycles (9 hours asleep)
1275 * 6021:15:00- Bed at this time for five cycles (7.5 hours asleep)
1365 * 6022:45:00- Bed at this time for four cycles (6 hours asleep)
15 * 600:15:00- Hours asleep on six cycles
6 * 90 / 609 hours- Hours asleep on five cycles
5 * 90 / 607.5 hours- How far four cycles falls under the seven-hour floor
max(0, 7 - 4 * 90 / 60)1 hours- Time in bed for six cycles, including falling asleep
(6 * 90 + 15) / 609.25 hours
Worked example
A 6:30 am alarm with fifteen minutes to fall asleep puts bedtime at 21:15 for six 90-minute cycles — nine hours asleep — or 22:45 for five, which is 7.5 hours and still clears the seven-hour adult minimum. Four cycles means going to bed at 00:15 for six hours, an hour short of it.
How to work it out yourself
- 1.Set the alarm first, then read back. Waking at the end of a cycle — in light sleep — is what makes one 7½-hour night feel better than an 8-hour one that ends in deep sleep.
- 2.Add your own falling-asleep time rather than the default. If you are asleep the moment you lie down, you are probably sleep-deprived, and the fix is an earlier bedtime rather than a better-timed one.
- 3.Five or six cycles is the target for an adult. Four is a short night, not a plan: at 90-minute cycles it is six hours, an hour under the CDC floor for adults.
- 4.Cycles lengthen as the night goes on, so the later times are the less precise ones. Treat every figure here as the middle of a twenty-minute window.
Bedtimes for a 6:30 am alarm
| Length of one sleep cycle (minutes) | Bedtime for six full cycles | Bed at this time for five cycles (7.5 hours asleep) | Hours asleep on six cycles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70 | 2315 | 0:25:00 | 7 hours |
| 80 | 2215 | 23:35:00 | 8 hours |
| 90 | 2115 | 22:45:00 | 9 hours |
| 100 | 2015 | 21:55:00 | 10 hours |
| 110 | 1915 | 21:05:00 | 11 hours |
| 120 | 1815 | 20:15:00 | 12 hours |
Cycle length varies between people and across a night. The 90-minute row is the average every sleep calculator quotes; the others show how much that assumption is worth.
The formula
- Bed at this time for six cycles (9 hours asleep)
1275 * 60 - Bed at this time for five cycles (7.5 hours asleep)
1365 * 60 - Bed at this time for four cycles (6 hours asleep)
15 * 60 - Hours asleep on six cycles
6 * 90 / 60 - Hours asleep on five cycles
5 * 90 / 60 - How far four cycles falls under the seven-hour floor
max(0, 7 - 4 * 90 / 60) - Time in bed for six cycles, including falling asleep
(6 * 90 + 15) / 60

Questions people actually ask
- What time should I go to bed to wake up at 6:30 am?
- 9:15 pm for six 90-minute cycles, 10:45 pm for five, or 12:15 am for four, each allowing fifteen minutes to fall asleep. Five cycles is 7½ hours of sleep and clears the seven-hour adult minimum; four is six hours and does not.
- Is the 90-minute sleep cycle real?
- It is an average. Cycles run from about 70 to 120 minutes, vary between people, and lengthen through the night as REM periods grow. The pattern is real; the precision most sleep calculators imply is not, which is why the cycle length here is an input rather than a constant.
- How much sleep do adults need?
- Seven hours or more a night, per the CDC and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine consensus. Teenagers need 8 to 10, school-age children 9 to 12. Regularly sleeping under seven is associated with higher rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression and traffic accidents.
- Is it better to sleep 6 hours and wake at a cycle boundary or 7 hours mid-cycle?
- Seven hours. Total sleep matters more than where the alarm lands — the cycle timing changes how groggy the first ten minutes feel, and the hour changes how the day goes. Use the boundary trick to choose between two bedtimes, not to justify a shorter night.
