There is no single answer to this question and pages that give one are wrong for about half the people who ask it. Age counts completed birthdays, so everyone born in 1968 spends part of 2026 at 57 and the rest at 58. A birth year of 1968 places you in Generation X.

Why the answer is a pair
Age in the US and almost everywhere else is age at last birthday: you are 57 until the day you turn 58, and then you are 58 for a year. Subtracting 1968 from 2026 gives 58, which is only right for the people whose birthday has already gone. For everyone else it is a year too high, and for anyone born on 31 December it is a year too high for all but one day of the year.
